  • Semolina (Suji/Rava) – 1 cup
  • Ghee – a little for roasting suji and a few drops for sautéing
  • Onion – 1, chopped
  • Tomatoes – 2, chopped
  • Seasonal vegetables – chopped (quantity as per preference)
  • Ginger – a small piece, grated
  • Cumin seeds – a few crushed
  • Turmeric – a pinch
  • Sugar – a pinch
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water

How To Make Mixed Vegetable Suji Upma/Suji Khichdi?

Follow the below steps to prepare Mixed Vegetable Suji Upma for babies;

  1. Roast suji/rava with a little ghee till it releases a nice aroma. Keep it aside.
  2. Now chop onion, tomatoes and other seasonal vegetables. Also, grate a small piece of ginger.
  3. Pressure cook the vegetables until soft.
  4. Now heat a few drops of ghee on a cooking pan and add a few crushed cumin seeds. A
  5. dd onion and tomato and saute till the onion is golden brown and the tomatoes are soft.
  6. Add the boiled vegetables, a pinch of turmeric, sugar and salt.
  7. Cook on medium heat and mix everything well.
  8. Also, in the meantime, boil water in a pan put the roasted suji/rawa and stir it continuously.
  9. Keep stirring and mixing until the suji absorbs the water.
  10. Now add the veggies and some more water.
  11. Mix well and cook for another 5 – 7 minutes.
  12. You might want to mix some more water to get a creamy textured upma.
  13. Your baby’s upma is ready to be served.
  14. Make sure to cool it off before feeding the upma to your baby.

  • Water

  2. Take half (1/2) cup quinoa and half (1/2) cup urad dal in a bowl.
  3. Wash and rinse very well, then drain and soak them for 30 minutes. 
  4. Now heat a small amount of ghee in a pan, then add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  5. After that add 1 chopped onion and fry on medium heat.
  6. Add some veggies like peas, carrots, corn/ sweet corn, beans etc. (It is best to steam or boil the chopped vegetables beforehand).
  7. Finally, add the soaked quinoa and some water and mix well.
  8. Cover and cook for 15 minutes and a yummy healthy treat is ready for your baby.

Sweet corn and peas, both hold bundles of nutritional values, especially protein, vitamins and fibre. Also, having high fibre content, this upma recipe is great for your kid’s stomach and guts. It is also considered as one of the tastiest baby food.


  • Peas – 1 cup (steamed and peeled)
  • Sweet corn – 1 cup (steamed and peeled)
  • Rava (Semolina or Suji) – ½ small cup (soaked in warm water)
  • Ghee – Small amount for cooking
  • Cumin seeds – To taste
  • Mustard seeds – To taste
  • Curry leaves – To taste
  • Salt – 2 small pinches
  • Sugar – 1 spoonful
  • Water/Milk – As needed

How To Make Sweet Corn and Pea Upma?

Follow the below steps to prepare Sweet Corn and Pea Upma for babies;

  1. Start by steaming the peas and sweet corn (both peeled). Avoid using frozen peas or corn while cooking for your infants and/or toddlers.
  2. Once steamed, crush both in a mixing bowl and keep aside. Now in another bowl, soak ½ small cup of rava (or suji, whichever ingredient is available) in warm water.
  3. Heat a small amount of ghee on a pan, and throw in some cumin seeds, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Saute for a couple of minutes on medium-high flame.
  4. Add the crushed sweet corn and green peas to the oil, and cook well on medium-low flame, until properly cooked and the oil starts leaving the mixture.
  5. Also, add 2 small pinches of salt and a spoonful of sugar.
  6. Now drain water from the soaked rawa and add the rawa to the pan.
  7. Add some water/milk and mix everything well.
  8. Cook on low flame for 7 – 10 minutes.

Don’t forget to taste this delicious pea-corn upma yourself before serving the savoury treat to your children.

And we know it is usually a struggle to feed an apple every day, especially to babies and even grown-up kids. So here is an easy and delicious solution – the oats and apple upma. This is one dish full of nutritional value and also is a nice and fulfilling meal.


  • Small/Medium-sized apple
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • Water (for steaming and soaking oats)
  • Ghee (small amount for frying)
  • Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Sugar (to taste)
  • Salt (two small pinches)

How To Make Oats and Apple Upma?

The oats apple upma is special because you can feed it to your baby anytime during the day or night. It’s also a very simple recipe to make – and no doubt very healthy for your baby. Follow the below steps to prepare Oats and Apple Upma for babies;

  1. Take a small/medium-sized apple and half a cup of oats.
  2. Skin and chop the apple into small pieces and wash properly. Put it on the steamer.
  3. Use the apple peels to boil with the water which is being used to steam the apple.
  4. We will use it later to cook the upma to ensure we are not giving away any nutrition which will prove beneficial for babies (make sure you are using drinking water to steam the apple).
  5. While the apple is steaming, wash 1/2 small cups of oats and soak it in warm water.
  6. Now heat a small amount of ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  7. Once the mustard seeds start to crackle, add some sugar put in the steamed apple and start frying over high frame for a couple of minutes.
  8. When the apple pieces are nicely caramelized, put the soaked oats in the pan and start mixing well.
  9. Add two small pinches of salt. Now strain the apple skins from the steam water and add it to the mix.
  10. Cover and cook well for 15 minutes on low frame.
  11. If needed add some more water till you get a smooth creamy texture. Serve fresh.

5. Carrot and Broken Wheat Upma

Carrot and Broken Wheat Upma

This is another power-packed types of upma for your baby. Being packed with fibre, it is especially good for children facing problems digesting their food, or regular stomach aches. 


  • Fresh newborn carrots – couple (approximate weight not specified)
  • Water – for washing carrots and pressure cooking
  • Broken wheat – 1 small cup
  • Sunflower oil or ghee – for cooking
  • Mustard seeds – as required
  • Cumin seeds – as required
  • Curry leaves – as required
  • Tomato – 1, finely chopped
  • Sugar – 2 teaspoons
  • Salt – optional (for a savoury twist)
  • Boiled peas – for garnish (optional)
  • Coriander leaves – for garnish (optional)

How To Make Carrot and Broken Wheat Upma?

You can cook this upma two ways – sweet or savoury – as per your kid’s preferences. However, it is just a matter of adding one ingredient – yes it’s that simple!

  1. Take a couple of fresh, newborn carrots. These are very healthy for babies and also easy to digest.
  2. Wash the carrots, skin them with the back of your knife and chop them into small pieces.
  3. Pressure cook them in a small amount of water.
  4. Once cooked, keep the carrots aside in a bowl.
  5. Use the same water to pressure cook 1 small cup of broken wheat. Cook until 3 – 4 whistles.
  6. In a pan, heat sunflower oil, or ghee (avoid using dalda). Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and one finely chopped tomato. Mix well on a high frame, but don’t let the tomato get mushy.
  7. Now add the carrots and 2 teaspoons of sugar and saute for a minute. Then add the pressure-cooked broken wheat to the pan.
  8. Add some more water and mix everything.
  9. Cook on low flame for 5 minutes. And your sweet carrot broken wheat upma is ready to serve.
  10. In case you prefer a savoury twist, add some salt after adding the sugar. Then put in the broken wheat and mix well till cooked properly. You can even garnish it with boiled peas and some coriander leaves.
